R.I.P. Vidal Sassoon 5.9.12
The British-born hairstylist created wash-and-go hair in the early 1960s. He liberated women from having to wear curlers to bed and make weekly trips to the salon by creating modern, geometric cuts that fell into place without a lot of fuss.~TELEGRAPH
EXTENSIONS
If they say "beauty is pain," then the beauty of achieving long, luscious locks is becoming more and more painful for many women, says Mary Pflum of ABC news. Now more and more women are following suit and using the extensions at home and work. Some as young as 19 are experiencing the dangerous side effects that come with trying to transform one's natural hair with hair pieces that make their hair longer and fuller. Women are experiencing permanent hair loss (traction alopicia) due to the weight and constant pulling of the extensions on the scalp. Finding a stylist who is an expert at extensions and who can asses the strength and integrity of your natural hair is critical. The best way to avoid these long term problems is to wear them for a special event or only a few days at a time. Hello, 'MANSOME!'
![]() New Documentary, Mansome
MORGAN
SPURLOCK'S breakthrough film, "Super Size Me," made millions of viewers rethink fast food. His latest, "Mansome," might inspire them to go out and get a haircut. Or laser hair removal. Or a face-lift. Or, just as likely, none of the above. A tongue-in-cheek documentary about the explosion of men's grooming, "Mansome" combines thumbnail profiles (a champion beard grower, a pro wrestler waging constant war against his body hair, a barber who specializes in toupees) with interviews with industry professionals including stylist Stefan Campbell and Cosmopolitan editor in chief Kate White.~Wall St Journal. WRINKLE PREVENTION PILLOW
About Face Products has introduced the Wrinkle Prevention Pillow, an
ergonomically designed pillow that supports the head, neck and spine
with a "memory foam" design that lifts and cradles the head to prevent
the permanent lines and wrinkles that can develop in the face and neck
during sleep. Sleeping in certain positions on the side and stomach can literally etch lines into the skin that do not disappear. ~MODERN SALON No wonder I look like this...I only have a traditional pillow! _

_The Daily Mail 1-23-12: Fujifilm says a special collagen called Pico-Collagen can penetrate the skin through gaps between cells. It is believed to work from inside the skin to restore the skin's youthful suppleness and elasticity. Collagen is also used in photography to stop old photographic images fading. The natural ingrediant in the product is astaxanthin and is believed to protect the skin from ultraviolet light. The same technology that Fuji uses to keep photographic images from fading will be used to keep your image from fading, too!
TOUSLED OR TAMED?
High glam or low maintenance? Rosie Hunington-Whitely demonstrates the two looks that I am seeing everywhere this season. The Golden Globes gave a us a very stark contrast between disheveled buns and sleek nouveau-retro looks.
Best part- easily achieved. Get out your largest hot rollers. Divide your hair into 5 sections, and roll. Brush through and spray. Smooth, shiny waves. Try Joico's JoiWhip Mousse applyed to clean, wet, towel dried hair. Allow you hair to air dry and just before you are ready to go out, blowdry with your hands only, tousel and spray. WINTER STATIC
Cold, dry air is a major winter problem for those of you with fine hair. Try a moisturizing shampoo and instead of a rinse out conditioner, use a spray, leave-in. Of course, hairspray is our most effective combatant, but you may find it interesting that gently smoothing a DRYER sheet over your hair works quite well, too. Give it a go!

Q: I would like to add a few streaks of bright color into my dark hair. Can I dye it that way?
A: No. Dark hair MUST be pre-lightened with bleach, then bright color can be applied over . Q: Can I perm over my colored hair? A: Yes, if you are willing to use professional products that will have the correct balance of moisture and protein to strengthen your hair. Q: How often should I cut my hair to keep it healthy? A: Generally, 4-6 weeks. If you are trying to grow your hair and it's in good shape wait 8. Q: Why does my long hair "mat up" at the nape of my neck? A: Your hair mats up when it rubs against your clothes. A bit of shine serum should control this. Q: My highlites look yellowish- is it from my flatiron? A: Most likely. Spray on a thermal protector before any heat is applied to your hair. Q: My hair is starting to thin, I'm 44. What can I do? A: Consider side effects from medicine, stress, genetics, hormones and speak to your doctor. Q:My little girl doesn't like to shampoo her hair because she is afraid of getting it in her eyes. A: Have her lay on her back, flat in the tub, with only a few inches of water. Shampoo and rinse in this position-make it a game! CAN BOTOX PROMOTE HAIR GROWTH?
A 2010 pilot study took place in Canada, testing 50 men with male patterned baldness or androgenic alopicia. The men were first observed for a 12-week baseline period then they were injected with 150 units of Botulinum toxin A (BTX A) followed by a second injection 24 weeks later.
According to Journal Watch Dermatology, “In the 40 patients who completed the study, mean hair counts increased 18% from baseline to 48 weeks after the initial injection, a statistically significant change. Hair loss was also significantly reduced, by a mean of 39%. The article by Michele Blackberg,RN, goes on to state that Botox is achieving the same results as Minoxodil. The proposed action behind the use of Botox to increase hair growth is that Botox paralyzes the scalp muscles, allowing more blood flow and more oxygen to reach the scalp skin. SPRING 2012

Embellished Updos Imaginative touches defined the season’s most memorable updos. At Yves Saint Laurent, teased chignons were secured with cage barrettes, hair pins and errant strands looked chic sticking out at Phillip Lim, feathers made a striking statement at Jason Wu, and pearl-adorned knots stole the show at Chanel. DIGITAL PERM
A new way to get those "BOHO" curls, has recently been imported from Japan. The Digital Perm is different in that it does not harm the hair - instead, say experts, leaving it soft and shiny. A pre-treatment step helps protect the hair, then a solution is applied only where a wave is desired - meaning a wave at the bottom of the hair, from the mid-lengths to the ends, is possible, allowing for a more natural-looking wave, says Deborah Arthurs of the Mail Online. It will be interesting to see if this trend takes off as I only do traditional perms a few times a year. In the 80's, I'd do 3 a day!
NEW HAIR DRYING TECHNOLOGY
_Ennova's hair drying and shaping system technology is the first
leap-frog technology to come out of the hair care market since the
invention of the ionic hair dryer. We've added a lot of additional
features to this patented device that are firsts in the hair care
industry, like a flat-iron built directly into the tip of the hair dryer
or interchangeable cartridges that can be inserted into the device for
infusing product directly into the user's hair, such as leave-in
conditioners, detangler, or hair fragrance, etc.," according to Peter
Garrett, President of Ennova Direct, states the S.F. Gate. You could own this innovative device as it's patent is up for sale. I am dying to see this device in a salon setting. All time saving tools are welcomed!
ALERT!
FORMALDAHYDE RISK
You may already be aware that the FDA is has been looking into the Formaldehyde levels of permanent straightening product BRAZILLIAN BLOWOUT and found them to be too high. Brazilian Blowout published a statement on its website earlier this fall, contesting the FDA analysis. "It is important to understand that this relates to the measure of potential formaldehyde released at a level that never occurs in a real world application," the company says.
So, an independent team took the debate directly to the hair salon. Their findings were published in November's issue of the Journal of Occupational and Environmental Hygiene, states an article in SHOTS -by NPR. Bottom line, all the straighteners tested had unacceptable levels of formaldehyde. PERFECT IMAGE SOLUTIONS- RECALL

CAN THIS DEVICE CONTROL HAIR LOSS AS A RESULT OF CHEMO?
_According to a recently published article in the Khaleej Times, many Doctors think so......
“This device is widely used in Europe,” Dr Latif pointed out, noting that this is the first time that a machine of this type is being used in the UAE. The device, which comes in the form of a helmet is placed on the head of the patient during chemotherapy treatment. The equipment acts as a cooling device that prevents hair follicles from getting damaged by the drugs. The device is used before, during and after the therapy and could last up to five hours depending on the treatment, said Dr Latif. Since it was introduced a few months ago, 16 patients receiving chemotherapy treatment at Al Noor showed about 74 per cent success rate. Hopefully this treatment will stop one more devastating problem for folks during such a difficult time.
HAIR STYLISTS ARE ON THE FRONT-LINES IN THE WAR ON SKIN CANCER......Public officials think hair stylists could play a vital role in physical health by helping spot potentially cancerous skin lesions on their clients' scalp, neck and face. Research published Monday in the Archives of Dermatology suggests some stylists and barbers are already informally performing these skin cancer exams on clients.
In a survey of 203 Houston-area hair salon workers, 58 percent of respondents told researchers from Harvard's School of Public Health that they had urged a client at least once to get a mole checked out by a medical professional. "Almost every dermatologist I've talked to anecdotaly has said to me, Yes, I've had a melanoma case referred to me by a hair professional," Alan Geller, a senior lecturer at Harvard and study co-author, tells Shots, NPR's Maria Godoys', health blog. Many people know that they have moles on their heads and necks but are unable to detect changes. Who, other than your stylists, are keeping a close eye on you, on a monthly basis? I have been thanked by many a spouse for encouraging their other half to get themselves checked out. |
